Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Commute is a transit companion for Jabodetabek: departure boards, fares, a journey planner and a map for KRL, MRT, LRT, KA Lokal and Transjakarta. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and the choices you have. The short version: the essentials work without an account, your location is processed on your device and never tracked in the background, and we do not sell personal data — to anyone, ever.
1. Overview
Commute is designed to need as little information about you as possible. Schedules, fare tables, station guides and map data are stored on your device and work fully offline. Optional features — the community feed, the AI assistant and Commute Premium — use online services, and this policy describes exactly what those features send and store.
By using Commute, you agree to the handling of information as described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the optional online features; the offline core of the app will still work for you.
2. Information we collect
Account information (only if you sign up)
Creating an account is optional and is only required for the community and Commute Premium. Accounts are provided by Firebase Authentication (Google). When you sign up we receive and store:
- Your email address, used to sign you in and to recover your account.
- A display name and profile information you choose to provide.
- A unique account identifier generated by Firebase.
We do not receive or store your password; authentication is handled entirely by Firebase.
Community content
If you post to the community feed, we store the content you publish — your posts, comments and your public display name — so that other riders can see them. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want fellow commuters to read.
AI assistant messages
When you chat with Kommy, the AI assistant, your messages are sent to our service providers to generate a reply and are processed for that purpose. Please don’t include personal information in chat messages — Kommy only needs stations and times to help you.
Location
Commute uses your location only while you are using the map or nearby-station features, and only with your permission. Your position is processed on your device to show you on the map and to rank nearby stations. We do not track your location in the background, we do not build a history of where you have been, and your location is never sold or used for advertising. During ride tracking, your position is used on-device to follow your progress along the line for that ride only.
Device and app diagnostics
We may receive basic technical information needed to keep the app working and improve it — such as your device model, Android version, app version, and crash or performance reports. This information is used to fix bugs and understand which features are used, not to identify you personally.
Subscription status
If you subscribe to Commute Premium, payments are processed by Google Play and entitlement management is handled by RevenueCat. We receive confirmation of your subscription status (active, expired, product type). We never see, receive or store your payment card numbers — those stay with Google Play.
3. Information stored only on your device
A large part of Commute never leaves your phone at all, including:
- Pinned stations and your favourites.
- Train reminders and their alarm settings.
- Cached schedules, fare tables and map/diagram data.
- Your preferences, such as language and theme.
This data is stored in the app’s private storage on your device. You can erase it at any time by clearing the app’s storage in Android settings or by uninstalling the app.
4. How we use information
- To provide the app’s features — boards, fares, planning, maps, reminders, community and Premium.
- To sign you in and keep your account secure.
- To respond to your AI assistant questions.
- To operate subscriptions and restore purchases.
- To diagnose crashes, fix bugs and improve the app.
- To send the reminders and notifications you have asked for.
We do not use your information to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell personal data.
5. Data sharing and service providers
We share information only with the service providers needed to run the features you use, and only to the extent needed:
- Firebase / Google — authentication, the community database and app infrastructure.
- RevenueCat — subscription entitlement management for Commute Premium, together with Google Play billing.
- CARTO — basemap tiles for the interactive map. Like any map-tile service, CARTO’s servers receive the map areas your device requests.
- Google AdMob — the free version of Commute may show ads served by AdMob, which can use advertising identifiers as described in Google’s policies. Premium removes ads.
- Affiliate partners (e.g. Shopee) — the shop section contains affiliate links. They open in the partner’s own app or website; whatever you do there is governed by that partner’s privacy policy, not ours.
We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or the public.
6. App permissions
- Location (foreground) — to show your position on the map, find nearby stations and power ride tracking. Never requested in the background.
- Notifications — to deliver the train reminders you set and important service messages you opt into.
- Exact alarms — so a reminder for the 05:12 train rings at exactly the right minute, and survives reboots.
- Internet — to refresh schedules, load the community and chat, fetch map tiles and manage subscriptions.
Each permission can be revoked at any time in Android settings; the related feature will simply switch off.
7. Data retention and deletion
On-device data stays until you clear it or uninstall the app. Account information and community content are kept while your account is active. You can delete your account — including your profile and your community posts — from the app’s settings, or by emailing us at support@commute.app. Account deletion is permanent and is normally completed within 30 days, except where we must retain limited records to meet legal obligations.
8. Security
We use reputable infrastructure providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for data in transit, and access controls on our systems. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information proportionately to how little of it we hold in the first place.
9. Children
Commute is a general-audience transit app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
When this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, tell you in the app. The version published here is always the current one.
11. Contact
Questions about privacy, or a deletion request, are welcome at support@commute.app.
